proinsulin
Preconverted pancreatic hormone
Proinsulin is the precursor molecule from which insulin is made.
Produced in the pancreas, it consists of insulin's two protein chains connected by a segment called the C-peptide.
The pancreas cleaves this connecting segment to release active insulin into the bloodstream.
Proinsulin levels can indicate how much insulin the body is producing: The test measured her proinsulin to assess pancreatic function.
