progeny testing
Breeding value assessment
Progeny testing is a method of evaluating an animal's genetic quality by examining the traits of its offspring rather than the animal itself.
The technique is especially important in livestock breeding, where a bull or stallion's value depends on whether its progeny inherit desirable characteristics: The dairy industry relies heavily on progeny testing to identify superior sires.
Results take years to accumulate but reveal genetic potential more reliably than the animal's own appearance.
