seed banks
Botanical preservation facilities
Seed banks are facilities that store seeds from a wide variety of plant species, preserving genetic diversity for future use.
They serve as insurance against crop failures, climate change, and extinction by maintaining viable seeds under controlled conditions—often cold and dry—that can remain dormant for decades or even centuries.
The most famous is the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway, sometimes called the "doomsday vault." Seed banks also refer informally to collections of cannabis seeds sold commercially.
