printing blocks
Carved text matrices
Printing blocks are pieces of wood, metal, or other material with a raised design or text carved into the surface.
When inked and pressed against paper or fabric, the raised portions transfer the image.
Before movable type, entire pages were carved as single blocks.
The technique survives in artistic printmaking and textile decoration: She carved printing blocks for her hand-printed wallpaper.
