prince-bishops
Mitered temporal rulers
Prince-bishops were Catholic bishops who also held secular political authority over a territory, functioning as both religious leaders and temporal rulers.
Common in the Holy Roman Empire, they governed church lands as sovereign princes: The prince-bishop of Salzburg ruled his domain for centuries.
The institution largely ended with Napoleon's reorganization of Europe.
