fair trade laws
Ethical commerce legislation
Fair trade laws are regulations that prohibit predatory pricing and unfair competition among retailers.
In the mid-20th century United States, these laws allowed manufacturers to set minimum retail prices, preventing large chains from undercutting smaller competitors.
Most such price-fixing provisions have since been repealed.
Separately, fair trade refers to certification systems ensuring producers in developing countries receive equitable compensation: fair trade coffee, fair trade chocolate.
