presidential papers
Executive branch documents
Presidential papers are the documents, records, and correspondence accumulated during a U.S. president's time in office.
These include memos, letters, drafts, and other materials created or received by the president and White House staff.
Since 1978, presidential papers have been legally designated as public property, typically transferred to the National Archives after a president leaves office.
The dispute centered on classified presidential papers found at his residence.
