pre-Vatican

Prior to reform

Pre-Vatican describes the Roman Catholic Church before the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965), which modernized liturgy, permitted Mass in local languages instead of Latin, and shifted the Church's relationship with the modern world.

The term often carries nostalgic or traditionalist connotations: pre-Vatican liturgy, the pre-Vatican Church.

Sometimes specified as pre-Vatican II.
