pollywogs
Baby frogs, essentially
Pollywogs are tadpoles—the aquatic larval stage of frogs and toads, before they develop legs and lose their tails.
The word is informal and slightly old-fashioned, favored by children and in rural speech: We caught pollywogs in the creek.
In naval tradition, a pollywog is a sailor who hasn't yet crossed the equator.
