pollywog

Baby frog, informally

A pollywog is a tadpole—the aquatic larval stage of a frog or toad, before it develops legs and loses its tail.

The word is informal and slightly playful, more likely in children's speech or casual contexts than in scientific writing: We caught pollywogs in the pond.

Also spelled polliwog.
