platemaker

Lithography shop worker

A platemaker is a person or machine that produces printing plates—the surfaces that transfer ink to paper in offset lithography and other printing processes.

The term covers both the skilled technician who operates plate-making equipment and the equipment itself: The platemaker burned the image onto the aluminum plate.

In modern printing, digital platemakers expose plates directly from computer files.
