placeholder name

Stand-in identity term

A placeholder name is a word used to refer to something whose actual name is unknown, forgotten, or unimportant.

English has many such terms: *thingamajig*, *whatchamacallit*, *doohickey* for objects; *John Doe*, *Jane Doe* for unidentified people; *Acme* for generic companies.

In programming and mathematics, placeholder names like *foo*, *bar*, and *x* stand in for values to be specified later: Just use a placeholder name for now.
