pit trap
Camouflaged ground hazard
A pit trap is a concealed hole dug to capture animals or enemies—the victim falls in before realizing the ground isn't solid.
The pit may contain spikes or be too deep to climb out of.
The term appears frequently in hunting, warfare history, and fantasy games where adventurers must watch their step: The dungeon floor was riddled with pit traps.
