spear thrower
Primitive projectile accelerator
A spear thrower is a handheld device that extends the arm's leverage to hurl a spear with greater force and distance than unaided throwing.
The tool—a stick or board with a hook or notch at one end to hold the spear's base—was used by prehistoric peoples worldwide and is still employed by some indigenous groups.
Also called an atlatl (from Nahuatl).
