pistes
Marked mountain trails
Pistes are groomed ski runs at a resort, marked and maintained for recreational skiing.
The term is standard in European skiing but less common in American English, where "trails" or "runs" predominates.
Off-piste skiing means venturing onto unmarked, ungroomed terrain: The fresh powder off-piste was incredible.
Piste also refers to a fencing strip or, in some contexts, a racetrack.
