pigeon hole

Sort into slots

A pigeonhole is one of a set of small open compartments, as in a desk or cabinet, for sorting and storing papers or letters.

The verb means to assign to a category, often dismissively or prematurely: Critics pigeonholed her as a folk singer.

To pigeonhole something can also mean to set it aside indefinitely: The proposal was pigeonholed and never revisited.
