phone operator
Line assistance worker
A phone operator is a person who manages telephone connections or provides assistance to callers.
Historically, operators manually connected calls by plugging cables into switchboards: Operator, get me the police.
Today the term usually means someone staffing a business phone line or call center: The phone operator put me on hold for twenty minutes.
