A pea jacket is a short, double-breasted wool coat, traditionally navy blue, worn especially by sailors.
The heavy fabric and snug fit protect against cold and wind at sea.
The style has crossed into civilian fashion as a winter coat: He threw on his pea jacket before heading out into the snow.
Also called a peacoat.
