patron deity
Worshipped protective god
A patron deity is a god or goddess regarded as the special protector or guardian of a particular place, group, or activity.
Cities in the ancient world had patron deities: Athena for Athens, Mars for Rome.
The concept extends to occupations, crafts, and causes—a patron deity of sailors, of harvest, of war.
In Catholic tradition, patron saints serve a similar function.
