partitive

Indicating a part

Partitive describes a part of a whole rather than the whole itself.

In grammar, partitive constructions indicate a portion: some of the cake, a piece of bread, none of the students.

The partitive article in French and Italian serves this function where English uses "some" or no article at all.

As a noun, a partitive is a word or construction expressing this relationship.
