making a wish

Hoping for something

Making a wish is the act of silently or vocally expressing a hope for something to happen, typically during a ritualized moment believed to carry special power: blowing out birthday candles, seeing a shooting star, tossing a coin into a fountain, breaking a wishbone.

The ritual usually requires keeping the wish secret for it to "work." She closed her eyes before making a wish.

The practice persists into adulthood as a mix of nostalgia, superstition, and hopeful thinking.
