pap test

Smear for cells

A pap test, also called a pap smear, is a medical screening procedure used to detect abnormal cells in the cervix that may indicate cancer or precancerous conditions.

Named after Greek physician George Papanicolaou, who developed the technique, the test involves collecting cells from the cervix and examining them under a microscope.

Regular pap tests are recommended for women as part of routine gynecological care.

Her doctor advised getting a pap test every three years.
