owner-operators

Drive their own rigs

Owner-operators are people who both own and operate their own business equipment, most commonly applied to truckers who own their rigs rather than driving for a fleet: Many owner-operators prefer the independence of choosing their own routes.

The term appears in other industries where the same person owns and runs the equipment—taxis, fishing boats, small aircraft.
