lumper

Cargo loading laborer

A lumper is a laborer who loads and unloads cargo, particularly at docks or warehouses.

The term also has a more abstract meaning in classification and taxonomy, where a lumper is someone who prefers to group things together into broad categories rather than splitting them into finer distinctions—the opposite of a splitter.

The botanist was a lumper who combined three separate species into one.

In trucking, lumpers are workers hired at warehouses to unload freight, often at the driver's expense.
