overstrikes

Prints atop existing

Overstrikes are characters typed over other characters, creating a composite symbol.

On typewriters, this was how you produced characters not on the keyboard—typing a hyphen over a colon to make a division sign, or an apostrophe over a period to make a semicolon.

In numismatics, an overstrike is a coin stamped over an existing coin, sometimes leaving traces of the original design visible beneath.
