overdriving
Pushing too hard
Overdriving is pushing something beyond its normal operating capacity.
An overdriven amplifier produces distortion—sometimes undesirable, sometimes sought by guitarists for its gritty tone.
Overdriving an engine means running it too hard or too long.
The term extends to any system or person pushed past sustainable limits: He's been overdriving himself for months.
