outfielders

Diamond's distant defenders

Outfielders are the baseball or softball players positioned in the outfield—the grassy area beyond the infield.

The three outfield positions are left field, center field, and right field.

Outfielders catch fly balls, field hits that get past the infielders, and throw to bases to prevent runners from advancing: The outfielders shifted toward right for the left-handed batter.
