designated hitters

Bat-only baseball players

Designated hitters are players in baseball who bat in place of the pitcher but don't play a defensive position.

The designated hitter rule, adopted by the American League in 1973 and Major League Baseball fully in 2022, allows teams to keep strong hitters in the lineup without requiring them to field: The team's designated hitters combined for twelve home runs this season.
