orphaning
Making a child parentless
Orphaning is the act of making something an orphan—depriving it of its parent or source of support.
Beyond literal use with children, orphaning appears in technical contexts: in computing, orphaning a process means terminating its parent while the child process continues running.
In publishing and typesetting, orphaning refers to leaving a single line stranded at the bottom or top of a page, separated from its paragraph.
The system crash resulted in orphaning several background processes.
