foundling home
Home for orphans
A foundling home is an institution that takes in abandoned infants and young children, providing shelter and care when parents are unknown or have surrendered them.
These establishments were especially common in earlier centuries when infant abandonment was more widespread: The baby was left on the steps of the foundling home.
Also called a foundling hospital.
