organoids
Tiny cultured organs
Organoids are miniature, simplified versions of organs grown in laboratory cultures from stem cells.
These three-dimensional cell clusters self-organize to mimic the structure and function of real organs—brain organoids, gut organoids, kidney organoids.
Researchers use them to study disease, test drugs, and explore development without experimenting on living organisms: The team grew liver organoids to study the effects of the new compound.
