optioning

Buying future rights

Optioning is securing or granting an option on something—typically the exclusive right to buy, sell, or use it within a set period.

The term appears most often in entertainment, where studios option books or scripts: The novel was optioned for film adaptation.

In sports, optioning a player means sending them to a minor league affiliate while retaining rights to recall them.
