onion skins
Papery vegetable peels
Onion skins are the dry, papery outer layers of an onion, removed before cooking.
They're too tough to eat but useful for adding color to stocks or dyeing Easter eggs.
Figuratively, onion skin describes anything thin and translucent: onion-skin paper, layers peeling away like onion skins.
