noviciates

Religious training periods

Noviciates is the plural of noviciate, the period during which a person prepares to join a religious order.

During the noviciate, candidates live in community, follow the order's rule, and discern whether they're called to permanent vows.

The term also refers to the place where novices live and train: The monastery's noviciate housed twelve young men.

Also spelled novitiate.
