nondestructively

Leaving things intact

Nondestructively describes doing something in a way that preserves the original intact.

The term appears most often in technical contexts: nondestructive testing examines materials or structures without damaging them, and nondestructive editing in software allows changes to be reversed because the original file remains unaltered.

The engineer nondestructively tested the welds for cracks.

Photo editing software that works nondestructively lets you undo any adjustment.
