new trial
Case heard again
A new trial is a legal proceeding in which a case is heard again, typically because of procedural errors, newly discovered evidence, or misconduct in the original trial.
Courts grant new trials when the interests of justice require starting over rather than simply correcting a verdict on appeal: The judge ordered a new trial after learning a juror had been bribed.
