Flirtatious subtle insults
Negging is a manipulative flirting tactic where someone gives a backhanded compliment or mild insult to undermine the target's confidence, supposedly making them seek the negger's approval.
The term emerged from pickup artist culture in the early 2000s: He negged her by saying she'd be prettier if she smiled more.
Now used more broadly for any passive-aggressive put-down disguised as casual observation.
