needle gauge
Wire diameter tool
A needle gauge is a standardized system for measuring the diameter of hypodermic needles and other hollow tubes.
Counterintuitively, higher gauge numbers indicate thinner needles—an 18-gauge needle is much thicker than a 25-gauge.
Medical professionals select gauge based on procedure: blood draws typically use 21-gauge, while insulin injections use finer 30-gauge needles.
The term also refers to the physical tool used to measure wire or needle thickness.
