narcotism

Opiate-caused unconsciousness state

Narcotism is the state of being under the influence of narcotics, or the habitual use of narcotic drugs.

The term appears in older medical and legal texts to describe both the drowsy, stupefied condition produced by opiates and the pattern of addiction itself: The physician noted signs of chronic narcotism.

Now largely replaced by more specific clinical terminology.
