sporangia

Fern reproductive structures

Sporangia is the plural of sporangium, the structure in fungi, ferns, mosses, and some other organisms that produces and contains spores.

When mature, sporangia typically rupture to release their spores for dispersal.

The familiar brown dots on the underside of fern fronds are clusters of sporangia.
