mycelia
Underground mushroom networks
Mycelia is the plural of mycelium, the vegetative body of a fungus—a network of thread-like filaments called hyphae that spread through soil, wood, or other substrates.
While mushrooms are the visible fruiting bodies, mycelia do the real work: absorbing nutrients, decomposing organic matter, and forming vast underground networks.
The mycelia extended several acres beneath the forest floor.
