mustard plaster

Old-time remedy

A mustard plaster is a poultice made by spreading a paste of ground mustard seed onto cloth and applying it to the chest or back.

Once a common home remedy for congestion, coughs, and muscle aches, the mustard creates heat and increases blood flow to the area.

The treatment has largely fallen out of use: Grandma swore by mustard plasters for chest colds.
