music reading
Decoding written notation
Music reading is the skill of interpreting written musical notation—understanding the symbols on a page well enough to perform or hear the music mentally.
The term often distinguishes those who can decode sheet music from those who play by ear: She's a strong music reader, His music reading is weak but he improvises beautifully.
Also called sight-reading when done without preparation.
