pitch recognition
Naming notes by ear
Pitch recognition is the ability to identify and react to a pitched ball in baseball or softball, reading its speed, spin, and trajectory early enough to make good contact.
Hitters work to recognize breaking balls versus fastballs before committing to swing.
The term also applies in music to identifying notes by ear, though this sense is less common.
