muriatic

Hydrochloric acid alias

Muriatic is a technical or archaic term meaning "of or relating to brine or salt." It survives almost exclusively in muriatic acid, an old name for hydrochloric acid, which was originally obtained from sea salt.

Hardware stores still sell dilute hydrochloric acid under this name for cleaning masonry and adjusting pool pH.
