multipass

Multiple rendering cycles

Multipass describes a process that operates in multiple passes or stages rather than a single sweep.

In computing and video encoding, multipass compression analyzes data in an initial pass to optimize the final output: multipass encoding produces better quality at the same file size.

The term applies broadly to any iterative approach where successive passes refine results.

Separately, multipass gained pop culture recognition from the 1997 film *The Fifth Element*, where it's a universal identification document—now used humorously for any all-access credential.
