monger

One who trades

A monger is someone who deals in or promotes a particular commodity or activity.

The literal sense survives in compounds like fishmonger and ironmonger (more common in British English).

The figurative sense dominates in American usage, usually with negative connotations: a warmonger promotes conflict, a rumormonger spreads gossip, a fearmonger stokes anxiety for effect.

The suffix -monger attaches productively to create new compounds: The senator dismissed his critics as mere hatemongers.
