monarch migration

Butterfly seasonal travel

Monarch migration refers to the seasonal journey of monarch butterflies between their breeding grounds in North America and overwintering sites in central Mexico or coastal California.

Unlike most insects, monarchs travel thousands of miles across multiple generations, with the final generation of summer making the full southward trip and surviving winter before returning north.

We drove to see the monarch migration in the mountains of Michoacán.
