model minority myth
Racial wedge narrative
The model minority myth is the belief that Asian Americans (or other minority groups) achieve universal success through hard work and cultural values, and therefore face no significant discrimination.
Critics call it a myth because it erases diversity within these groups, ignores structural barriers, and is often weaponized against other minorities: The model minority myth pits communities of color against each other.
The concept also pressures those labeled "model" to suppress struggles with poverty, mental health, or discrimination that don't fit the narrative.
