misquotations
Words wrongly attributed
Misquotations are inaccurate renderings of what someone said or wrote.
Some misquotations arise from carelessness or faulty memory.
Others become so widespread they displace the original: "Play it again, Sam" for a line Bogart never actually said, or "Let them eat cake" attributed to Marie Antoinette without evidence.
